- Position in relation to cross.
- Communication with defenders.
- Assessing the flight and pace of the ball.
- Decision-making - to come or stay.
- Taking cross at goalkeepers highest point.
- First touch catch / Throw or Kick to counter attack.
- Technique of dealing with the cross - Catch or Punch.
- Do not anticipate the cross.
Mobility and Movement
- Sideways movement.
- Hand position (W).
- Feet adjustment.
- Sharpness into relevant postion.
- Always be inline with the ball.
- Moving body weight.
- Able to cover the goal at every point
- Top and bottom corners. -
- Explosive power brings match winning saves.
- High jump spring.
Pass Back
- Provide a passing angle for the man in possession.
- As the ball is on its way, quickly get in line.
- Decide on the number of touches to take.
- Control and pass away from the defender.
- Relax and play the ball out of your feet.
- Practice with either foot.
- Let the players know which is your stronger foot.
- Do NOT take risks.
Goalkeepers who are not comfortable with the pass back are a liability to their team
Positional
- Moving into line with the ball.
- Move towards the ball - the goal will become smaller.
- Successful goalkeeping is about being in the right place at the right time
- Stay big until last moment.
- Adopt a good start position.
- Be ‘set’ in the ready position as the ball is struck.
- Expect a shot at any time.
- React quickly to make any second save.

Shape
- Chest facing out to play.
- Pushing body weight forward (not on heels).
- Always face out (do not turn back on play).
- Always have the ball in veiw.
- When making a diving save make sure you see
the ball from the shooter right into your hands.
